EIA Briefing Document on CITES National Ivory Action Plans (NIAPs)
The 17th Conference of the Parties (CoP17) to CITES adopted Guidelines to the National Ivory Action Plan (NIAP) process, offering a way forward in strengthening the response of individual countries to address elephant poaching and/or ivory trade.
This briefing assesses progress made by five NIAP countries – China, Kenya, Laos, Mozambique and Vietnam – selected for the important role they play in the ivory trade.
We urge CITES Parties to employ International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime indicators to evaluate the impact of their governments’ responses to wildlife crime.
